New York Here I Come!

Look out Manhattan, I’m headed your way soon!
Unfortunately, it will be a lot shorter of a trip than I originally intended. I’m only there on business for one day, but wanted to make a vacation weekend out of it. However, after checking a few Web sites…who knew hotels in Manhattan were so expensive? Who can afford $300-$400 per night?
I really want to check out some museums and come back with a whole list of “Things I Didn’t Buy” after traipsing around the hallowed ground on which my fictional idol Carrie Bradshaw once “strutted,” but it sounds like my dream will have to wait.
That’s OK. The last time I was in New York (actually the only time), I felt like an unstylish mammoth. I was about 3 inches taller and 50 lbs. heavier than all the petite raven-haired fashionistas I saw on the street. My clumsy falling habits probably don’t help the scenario. At least when I stay in Chicago, I’m kind of cute.

I know, I managed to book a double room at the Westin Times Square for $300 on Expedia last time I went and actually shared it with a co-worker so we could hang out in the city instead of staying in New Jersey or something.

I feel sure you can find something in the $150 range. Did you try the Edison, the Holiday Inn, that sort of thing? Some of the chains have smaller, slightly more out of the way branches, but still in Manhattan in perfectly good neighborhoods. You might also get a cheap rate for weekend nights in a hotel in the financial district since those usually go to business travelers.
I live in NYC, I hate to see someone pop in and not get the full experience of the place. It’s awesome.

We stayed at a LaQuinta Inn not too far from times square for only $99/night. That was two years ago, though.
You’re absolutely right about feeling unstylish in NY compared to here in Chicago. The clothes we brought back (and of course added to our debt back then) were unlike anything we saw in Chicago.

Consider using priceline. I’ve done bookings in the past with that service, and you’d be surprised the kind of rooms you’d get for a good price.

I forgot. If you do use Priceline, check out this website first: http://www.biddingfortravel.com/. You can see what other people are getting for their bids thru Priceline and/or Hotwire. Good luck!

I think you should check craigslist for short stay hotels, rooms and inns. Take a look at this: Central Park West, 200 for the weekend.

Do yourself a favor and DON’T stay in times sq.
There are also some b&b type places in the west village that are much more NYC.

ooops sorry, after reading that CL post, it is staying with someone. My fault, but keep checking and do some research, you’ll find something that is more quaint. Best of luck and enjoy your trip!

Stay in Hoboken, NJ and take the PATH into the City.
