March Charity – Chicago Police Memorial Foundation

Technically it’s April, but I still need to post my March “12 charities in 2011″ update. As you probably know, this year I wanted to explore a more diverse group of charities in 2011 and make giving more of a habit, so I pledged to donate to one charity per month in 2011. In January, I donated to the Chicago Food Depository (I’m actually volunteering there next weekend, too!), and in February I chose Heifer International. My March charity is another local group, and one that I’ve been involved with for several years: the Chicago Police Memorial Foundation (CPMF).
Every year I (along with family members) participate in the Foundation’s Run to Remember, a 5K that benefits the families of Chicago police officers who have fallen or been catastrophically injured in the line of duty. This is a personal cause for me: my dad is currently serving his last of more than 25 years on the force. Every time an officer dies, my heart breaks. Sometimes we know their family members. Sometimes we know their friends. Sometimes they have kids, left without a mom or dad. Sometimes their parents bury their children. Every time, it’s a tragedy. More than 550 officers have died in the line of duty while protecting our communities. We’ll be running to honor their memories and help their families.
Over the years, I’ve learned that many Chicagoans and my readers involved with law enforcement appreciate the chance to contribute to this unique and important cause. This year, I am sharing my fundraising web site for those who are inspired to donate – any gift of even $10 will make a difference and is greatly appreciated.
You can follow this link to make a donation to the Foundation via my team’s fundraising page:http://www.active.com/donate/r2rememb2011/RunningForWaffles
And those interested in learning more about the Foundation can visit the CPMF web site here:http://www.cpdmemorial.org/content/about-us
Thank you in advance for your consideration. The race takes please on April 30, so any donations before then are appreciated.

I applaud your approach to charity for 2011 — there are so many worthy causes, I think trying to increase the diversity of your giving is excellent.
And well done on doing some hands-on volunteering, as well! While you have the financial means to be able to donate some money, as well, not everyone can, and donating one’s time or goods is also an excellent way to support a good cause.
