Why is Gas So Expensive?

Posted on February 23, 2011 9 Comments

I drove to work this morning for the first time ever at this office - I usually take public transportation - and noticed I need to fill up my tank, which is going to set me back about $50 this week. The following post from One New Voice really spoke  to me today, so I wanted to share.

Thanks so much for the mention. I was thinking the same thing about gas the other day. It really is getting high. $5 is the estimate now. I sure hope it doesn’t get that high. http://onenewvoice.blogspot.com

I hate to be a party pooper but USA is the one of the cheapest gas prices country in the world. As much as I hate seeing prices going up to $5 a gallon it still is not much compared to $4 a liter or more. I was born and raised in Europe and gas prices here are still cheaper than overseas. Even Canada has high gas prices.
I was just thinking how I will need to adjust my gas budget since I do not see prices dropping below $3 any time soon.
How many miles per gallon do you get in your new car? I get about 29 per gallon in my trusty Honda.

Sorry Missie, the link should be updated now.

Tanja – I get usually somewhere between 17-32 miles to the gallon in my Subaru, depends on what kind of driving it is. Usually on the highway it’s always 28 and up, but in stop and go traffic (and in 1st and 2nd gear) the fuel efficiency goes down to like 17. We only buy 1 tank of gas per month, though, and I’m always shocked when I buy it!

Budgeting Babe you are so lucky, I wish I can fill up once a month. I commute 50 miles a day to and from work … I wish our transit system was better.

I bought a Prius last year. It took alittle getting used to the lack of zip, but the fuel economy and comfort make up for it. I get 51 mpg during the summer and 48 in the winter. I live fairly close to work so a tank of gas ($25.00) lasts me two weeks. I was paying that same amount per week 5 years ago.

If you can’t afford one of those highspeed Prius’s A 4cyl Diesel from VW gets about 50mpg without hybrid technology.
