OMG! I will blow your mind with sandwich news!!!

Attention working peeps of the world who are on budgets:

I know you try to keep your lunches under a certain amount of $$ each day, and I know you don’t always have time to bring lunches from home (I try, but it never seems to work). So you often resort to fast food joints, sub shops, delis or the like to save a few $$ on your budget.

I also know you’re worried about your waistline… because, let’s face it, what desk jockey isn’t? Or maybe you’re worried you’ll develop office ass, a common physical trait of those of us chained to our chairs.

Today I didn’t bring a lunch, so I wandered outside my office. I originally wanted Potbelly’s or Jimmy John’s (sub sandwiches), but ended up at McDonald’s, where I landed (guiltily) on a Quarter Pounder with Cheese. My lunch was cheap, and I won’t lie, it was fabulous.

Tonight, still feeling guilty, I hopped on McDonald’s Web site to see how much damage I did. And let me tell you, I was shocked… SHOCKED!!!

A QUARTER POUNDER WITH CHEESE HAS FEWER CALORIES THAN A JIMMY JOHN’S SUB!!!!! (510 vs. 550!)

Both have about 26 g of fat. The QP has more fiber and more protein! The sub has like 200 mg more sodium! The only the JJ sub has going is its 4 g of saturated fat vs. 12 in the QPw/C, and it has about 40 mg less cholesterol.

All this time I thought I was eating healthy! This is bad news…I eat Jimmy John’s a lot. Sigh.
I guess if it seems too good to be true, it really is.

this reminds me of that 60 minutes report where they showed people how much calories were actually in their “healthy” Subway subs.
Then again most of them were eating footlong meatball subs w/ extra cheese :)

Also, I’ve started bringing my own lunch to work, and when you make it a habit it doesn’t feel like such a chore. My trick is to prepare it while I’m making dinner.

OK, a couple of ideas to make lunch easier for you:

    1) Instead of making something specifically for lunch (I suck at sandwiches), I deliberately cook too much for dinner and dish up a portion into my lunchbox for the next day. This only works if you have access to a microwave, though.

    2) In one of my jobs, we weren’t allowed to eat hot food in the office in case it smelled (too many clients and no lunch room). I resorted to stocking a drawer with tuna “Lunch Pots” and bringing in bags of mixed salad leaves from the local supermarket and/or bagels. (Although the salad didn’t last too long, I found that a bagels kept very well – several weeks – in the fridge.) At a pinch, I could just have the tuna.

    HTH.

This is such a shock – I bet your numbers would have been even better going with another option without cheese.

Feels like when I learned a glazed donut was less calories then a croisant.

Wow, I thought being on a diet meant going to Jimmy Johns. Not any more, bring on the quarter pounder!!

One of the things my wife and i do is to make enough salad to last the week to bring to work. We chop up the lettuce and store each ingredient of the salad in a different container. it takes 5 minutes to throw it all together on your way out the door.

    Healthy and cheap

Quarter pounders are my favorite things from the McD’s menu, but I’ve avoided them for years because of the [lack of] nutrition. This is an eye opener!

The good thing is most restaurants have nutritional info on their websites, so it’s easy to compare.

I also am a big fan of making more the night before to bring to work. If you have access to a microwave, it’s best, if not thermoses work well too.

I generally bring my lunches in, just didn’t have time/resources to throw something together yesterday. But good advice, all.

I don’t think the QP can be considered healthy or nutritious at all, I just wanted to point out how UNHEALTHY the JJ’s sub was.

I had lunch plans with a friend today, so I didn’t bring my own lunch–when she suddenly couldn’t make it, I chose the quarter pounder…I know I could’ve found healthier options, but I wanted one, and after reading this, I knew it might not be significantly more or less healthy than something else I may have chosen.

Some of the salads, incidentally, have crazy calorie counts. I have looked those up!

Depending on how close to Jackson and Sate you work. Stop by Chicken Planet. For $5 (with tax) you can get a 1/4 grilled chicken white meat with two sides and a drink. It’s really good.

What are you putting on your sandwich??? I guarantee if you forego cheese and mayo you will lose several hundred calories (and probably not even be able to taste any difference!).

You know McDonald’s salads have more fat/calories than the burgers? It’s because of the dressing, cheese, and bacon of course.

Sandwich is just standard JJ fare, according to their web site… that’s just bread, mayo, turkey, sprouts, lettuce and tomato!

The mayo is worth about 200 cal, I think, so if you forgo that you’ll be around 350 cal.

There’s nothing wrong w/ eating Jimmy Johns. Want to make it healthier? Eat half your sub for lunch and then save the other half for an afternoon snack. Spreading out eating this high calorie sub will make it healthier.

Quarter pounder. It’s been a while and I do remember that they tasted pretty good, though. I think everyone knows, though, that it’s really pretty bad for you. I’ve tried to plan my meals out for the week and that helps a lot. I’m not tempted to buy outside of what we have in the house because I’ve already planned ahead. It’s certainly not insurance that I won’t grab the occasional pizza but it does lead to more thoughtful planning and food choices.
