Tons of cool tools exist online to help plan for the future. What is not helpful is when your age group is left out of the tool. Exhibit A:
Money Magazine’s retire young calculator
I am 28. Can you spot the problem?

I know! Several of Money’s other calculators (and other sites’, to be fair) let you put in all the data and get results, but then under your results is a footnote saying that the lowest age the software calculates is 30.
Guess I can’t be too doing too badly if financial calculators aren’t even designed to take my info into account yet!

I would just make the “How much you should have” value my savings GOAL for when I hit 35 (I’m 29). At least by then, when you try the calculator again, you’ll know for sure that you’re on the right track !
