Purchase Updates

I’ve been really busy with work lately (late nights, weekends, even sometimes I even dream about it), and when I get a free moment I just want to shop. Part of the problem is that my wardrobe no longer fits due to the weight I’ve lost, and part is that there have been really good sales. But mostly I’ve been super stressed, and we all know that shopping is one of my big stress relievers.
Here’s an overview of what I bought last week alone. Scary.
Spent $140 at Target
Mostly on household cleaning supplies, shampoos, razors, make-up, etc. But I did spend approximately $70 on clothes. I got the following:
- 1 pair Mossimo pants @ $20
- 1 pair Proenza Schouler pants @ $40. I love, love these pants, but they’re just a bit too snug so I have to take them back and get another size. Unfortunately, by the time I take them back, the rack will probably be gone
- 1 empire waist shirt @ $9.99 (fantastic deal)
Spent $50 at Carson Pierre Scott going-out-of business sale
Every top in the store was $4.99 (including jackets and sweaters)! Every pair of pants, and all skirts were $7.99! Bras were $5 each! Shoes were $9.99!!! My mom and I went on Sunday, and were there digging through 4 floors of racks for more than three hours. I nearly fainted from exhaustion and excitement.
- 6 shirts, including 2 sweaters (for $30 total)
- 2 bras
- 1 pair of shoes for my cousin as a gift (they were all out of my size except for one lone sneaker that I loved. I walked around the shoe department for 20 minutes trying to find its mate. I seriously considered buying one lone shoe for $5 because I loved it that much)
- My mom bought me a purse while we were there, too – originally marked $140, on sale for $15
Then, I also bought one of my best friends the following for her wedding shower on Amazon (can’t share the price, of course! But it was in my “gifts” budget for the month):
- A smoothie maker
- A smoothie book
I wanted to get her something more meaningful, but all the really cool stuff was already bought off her gift list. So, I ended up with the smoothie-maker. Also, when I was in Nashville, I heard a song demo performed by a songwriter who’s trying to get it recorded, and I think she’d love it, so I got the demo on CD and will give her a copy. Wouldn’t it be cool if it were picked up by a big artist and went to No. 1?
Well, I’m off to Peoria for the weekend to attend the shower and hang with the girls. It’s my first weekend off work in February, so I definitely need to unwind. Hope you all have a great weekend, too!

I just wanted to say you’re a hottie!
Nice blog too. But one piece of financial advice from an investment banker in New York around your same age — don’t try to mimic the women on SATC. This city is full of them and they usually end up old and alone. The only other advice I can offer is if you want to be in a position where money isn’t a problem marry an investment banker.

Ha ha. While I love the social lives of the women on SATC, I know that it would be foolish of me to mimic them. Read on! I think you’ll find I’m pretty different.
Also, I think it’s interesting that you say I should “marry” an investment banker instead of become one. Not the kind of advice I’d give! Women are totally capable and marriages aren’t permanent in today’s world.

Nicole, don’t worry about “anon”s comments. She is missing the point: that you know how to strike a healthy balance and take financial responsibility for yourself.
I love, love, love Target and wish there were one more readily accessible from my apartment. Someone once said that it has a $100 “Target tax,” meaning you can never without spending at least that much. So true!

Sorry Nicole, I didn’t mean to imply you couldn’t or shouldn’t become an investment banker. I was just kidding around recommending you should marry into money since you’re hot.
Susan, I’m a guy not a girl. By the way I think it’s good that you women are taking care of your finances. Too many girls I know live just like Carrie, spending way to much on way to little of a salary. You just end up digging yourself into a bigger and bigger hole that one day you can’t get out of.

Oh, I knew that you were kidding … Just wanted to call you on it! I wouldn’t be The Budgeting Babe if I didn’t. Apology accepted And thanks for the hottie compliment! Appreciate the post.
