Warmness…mmm…

I found a slim-fitting, 3/4-length down coat (with faux-fur trimmed hood) at Carson Pirie Scott today that sold on the rack for $200. Very urban, very cool. I had visions of wearing it with jeans and work clothes alike to warmly run all of my holiday errands on State Street after a long day’s work. Luckily, the store was offering a one-day-only 40 percent off sale. I was thrilled…until I noticed the coat was missing two buttons. I put it back on the rack, but no others were available in my size. I went home, sad to have missed out on such a great deal and left with the unfortunate knowledge that my coat, the one that’s falling apart at every seam possible, would have to do for another week, at least.
When I got home, though, I took the advice of one of Brian’s co-workers and tried Overstock to see if a comparable coat was available. Sure enough, the exact same coat was for sale… FOR $99!!! (And shipping was only $2.00!) That is 50 percent off the original price at Carson’s, and still less than the sale price. Can you believe it?
Needless to say, I bought the coat. It was on my list of winter “musts.” (There are few things you can’t neglect during the Chicago winter, and a warm, sturdy winter coat is one of them.) Thank you Overstock!

next time you should check with a sales rep at carson’s — sometimes they’ll give you an extra 20% off if something is wrong with the article of clothing (small stain or rip). Maybe missing buttons qualify too, though it sounds like you got a great deal.

I once got a Chip and pepper jeans for $52.00 (original price $252) because the belt loop was ripped. I got home and fixed it in 5 minutes. Most stores will give you a great discount if there is a problem with the garment. When it comes to buttons most of the time the discount will be less (read easy to fix) then if the seam is ripped or garment is stained.
Good job on finding the deal. I always say that when it comes to coats and boots you just have to spend some money. If you find a good pair of boots or a good coat they can last you for years to come.

Hm… When I worked retail, we’d give 10% off. However, buttons are usually more expensive than you think if you buy them on your own. (Remember that post I sent you early on about sewing on your own coat buttons? Gosh that was ages ago!)
I think you did the right thing searching online for the item. Just remember though, if everyone does that, then you will eventually not have a store to window shop because they will have gone out of business without your patronage.

10% off seems like a small incentive to purchase damaged goods. I was told be a major retailer that it is their company policy to give only 10%. Any more than that and it’s more cost effective to return the goods to their supplier.

Mapgirl, I do remember your button post. I actually did successfully sew one on after that!

If you’re not careful, most stores would triple the price, it’s a highway robbery out there. But for most parts also, you could run away with a 50% discount if their products turn less than what you expect, and they know about it. Lol
Anyways, nice one.
