“I bet you didn’t know that the average American buys gifts for around 15 people and spends an average of $75 per person. Americans who admitted to preparing a budget for holiday shopping, half of them exceeded it by 22%. Those were the findings from a WingspanBank.com survey, which also confirms that Americans have been known to overspend by $20 billion a year. Great news for retailers, certainly, but a loud warning signal for discipline-challenged shoppers. What’s more: Around 75 million people will wait until Christmas Eve to complete their shopping. Certainly not the best time to save money.”

I LOVE her tips. Check some of them out:
* Decide how much you have to spend, and then stay within that budget. Overspending tends to set a standard for gift giving that you’ll be expected to live up to year after year.
* If you overspend on one line item on your budget, under spend on others in order to make up the difference.
* Shop alone so you’ll stay focused and avoid distractions.
* Shop for bulk items such as nuts and cheeses at warehouse stores like Sam’s or Costco; then fill and decorate individual bags.

People just get crazed around the holidays, for some reason…hubby and I don’t concern ourselves so much with how much we spend on each person on our list, but on getting them something thoughtful. Some years we have more in our gift-giving budget than others, but we just deal cheerfully with whatever budget we have. This means that we give a variety of homemade and home-crafted items (we’re big on things like home-made fudge, home-made salami, and other such gifts that we put together), and we also are not afraid to hunt for sales, etc…we just spend a bit of time hunting for a gift that we think the recipient will enjoy and that also reflects us…and we honestly don’t care whether it costs $5 or $20 (or sometimes $30), as long as it fits in our budget for that year.

And by the way, this year we plan on adopting a Salvation Army Angel, just as we did last year. Last year, we lost a beloved aunt, and her favorite and most active charity she volunteered for was the Salvation Army…she always said “I have one of the best jobs there…I get to pass out the presents to families just before Christmas!” Our aunt was a funny, lovely, thoughtful, generous person, and wherever she was, there was a party.
So this holiday season, give, also. Even if you can only give some of the spare change in your pocket, rest assured, it will help.

Each year, I make a spreadsheet of who, what, where, and how much… it helps me stay in line pretty well.

One thing we’ve done to help ease the cost of the holiday season is to set up a ‘holiday’ savings account. We put away $25 each paycheck and that way we have enough to buy in December without breaking the bank!

My spread sheet works very well for me. But i am planning to keep some more money aside for Christmas. Do you have any other suggestions to save money ?

If you’re using your credit cards, beware of credit card traps like the company changing the terms of your contract at any time.
