The last five things I spent money on

Posted on November 1, 2006 33 Comments

This will be a fun little insight…
Here are the last five things I spent money on, in chronological order, from most recent to least:

1) $4.25 for a medium soy chai latte and a Wall Street Journal this morning because I missed my train, had 20 minutes to blow and needed to stay warm (inside the train-side coffee house).

2) $150-ish at Whole Foods stocking up on food for the next week and beyond (yes, I know Trader Joe’s is cheaper but it was too far away to go last night before it closed)…because, well, I’m trying to buy foods with simple ingredients that I can pronounce as an attempt to live healthier. There is a difference…compare your list of Jif ingredients to Whole Foods’ 365 brand peanut butter for one example.

3) $512.50 check for rent (yep, it’s cheap).

4) $94.05 to Metra for a monthly transit pass and a CTA link-up (bought at the station last night).

5) $2.00 to CTA because the pre-7:00 bus never came, my link-up pass ran out (CTA link-up pass expires daily at 7:00 p.m.), and when I finally hopped on a bus to the train station at 7:15 p.m., my card was no good :(

So there you have it. Roughly $760 since 7:00 p.m. last night on tea, transportation, rent and food. What were your last five expenses?

Neat idea! From the most recent:
-$5 at Target last night, buying granola bars with coupons and a pair of gloves for my mom
-$12 at Ralphs on Monday evening, buying a few groceries
-$756 at Firestone for brake repairs and some other stuff (gasp!)
-$330 for a plumber (another gasp!)
-$4 at Ralphs on Saturday buying two containers of cake icing

Are you near a Wild Oats? The store goes by several different names, but check on their website: http://www.wildoats.com. It’s very similar to Whole Foods except slightly cheaper.

As for my last 5 expense:
~$20 for gas (woohoo for cheaper gas prices!)
$18 on pizza (buy one get one free from papa johns and we have tons of left overs)
    $25 at Trader Joes
~$30 at Target for a Halloween costume (Harry Potter robe) and hair supplies
$? – I can’t remember my 5th last purchase, but probably groceries or gas

    Enjoy the blog!!

    In reverse chronological order:
$57.23 for groceries at Safeway last night
$1.20 late fee for library book
    $54.99 Gas/Electric bill
    $691.47 Rent/Water bill
$23.63 Tank of Gas on Sunday

    How boring.

Here we go (don’t get too excited):

    Today:
2.43 – med bowl of cream of broccoli soup in company cafeteria
1.64 – tall bold coffee at Starbucks
    45.93 – DH Verizon bill
    259.35 – 1/2 month after-school care for 2 elementary age kids

    Yesterday:
Nothing – worked from home and did the trick or treat thing

    Monday:
5.30 – 3 bags of candy at KMart

Does adding $700 to savings on 11/1 count as an expenditure?

$118.75 towards my credit card. Slowly but surely it will decrease.
    $66.00 to ComEd.
    $680 for rent.
$14.83 at the Jewel for a strip steak, aspargus, keylime pie and boxed mashed potatoes. I so want to go for a steak dinner but made one at home with my boyfriend instead. Can be $14.00 for two dinners!
$5.49 for a breakfast sandwich at Del Monico’s. Yum.

Haven’t been outside for a couple days (jeepers, I sound like a shut in)…
My last five purchases were all investments (done this morning).
    Woo Hoo…party on! LOL!

    Most recent first:

    $3.52 – Thortons for chips & soda
$2.00 – CTA from Loop to Oak Park
$1.62 – Payless for shoe inserts (stupid boots were way to uncomfortable today!)
$8.00 – Cab from Union Station to work (didn’t have a bus pass for the building bus).
    $30.10 – Ordered photos from a friend’s wedding

Payless was a good deal, but the cab wasn’t smart (sometimes its just too cold & far to walk though!)

    :)

I’m not going to go into the details of my last 5 purchases, but I did want to make one comment: I will be extremely happy for you the day either a) public transportation n your area becomes more reliable or b)you purchase a car. For as long as I’ve read your blog (which I’ve lost track of by now) you’ve never really mentioned wanting to purchase a car. I imagine that’s because you have bigger goals, such as purchasing a home, but I’m also rooting for the day you no longer have to rely on public transportation because it can be such a major pain sometimes. I totally feel you on that one!

Last five purchases (for me, not my hubby):

–$13.82 at Brookshire’s (grocery store) for sugar-free cake and frosting mixes (some to stock pantry and also to make Halloween cupcakes–yummy!)

–$62.47 at vet’s for our dog’s annual shots and a bag of cat food (for our cat, obviously)

–$66.56 at Brookshire’s for some pantry items and goodies for our Halloween meal (we’re still munching on the stuff I made)

–$52.57 at liquor store (we live in a dry county and must drive about 30 miles round trip, so I try to stock up when I go)

–$149.20 on Target credit card for miscellaneous Target charges (we pay off our credit cards in full each month)

As for rent/mortgage–we’ve got the best deal of anyone here, I imagine–our house is paid for, so no rent or mortgage!!

And in regard to the other poster who mentioned Nicole’s getting a car–yes, a car can provide more reliable transportation, but it’s more expensive–and not as environmentally friendly–as public transport. We’re in a rural area, so no public transport, alas.

The last thing I bought was pizza last night, $20, then Halloween candy, $4, then about $125 on groceries and I believe $10 on some burgers and fries over the weekend. Beyond that I am not sure, unless you count the automatic expenses. I though our rent was cheap, $600, but you have us beat by about $80 bucks. Why do you pay $512.50 and not $512.25? Whats up with that?

    $500 toward new kitchen cabinets

    it wasn’t a normal day!

I second the Wild Oats recommendation (called Sun Harvest in some areas). Target also has some decent prices on certain health/natural foods – their natural PB is good and costs only $2 a container in my store – plus their natural cereals are often on sale (I find it hard to pay more than $2.50 for a box of cereal, which is hard with natural cereal, but usually I can do it at Target, so long as I’m not set on a particular brand of cereal) and they have 2 packs of soy milk for less than soy milk costs elsewhere.

I know I’m late with this, but I just ran across your blog and wanted to participate!

In reverse chronological order, rounded up to the nearest dollar:
    1) Nice brunch with my boyfriend this morning: $35
    2) Some cheese and a pint of Ben & Jerry’s at the deli yesterday for an evening in with my mom: $8
    3) Grande white mocha at Starbucks yesterday (Starbucks really isn’t a habit with me): $5
    4) A slice of cake and a coffee at Veneiro’s Thursday night: $6
    5) A ticket for Short Bus: $11

I sound very much indeed like a spendthrift with a sweet tooth!
