Credit card report

My credit card bill has arrived. Ordinarily, this is the moment of the month when I bury the bill under paperwork and run the other way until the last minute before it’s due (thus, eliminating the need to actually think about my purchasing habits). This month, however, for your reading pleasure, I’m posting it.

My total bill is $1,858 – sounds like a lot, but $1,281.74 of it is work-related. That’s pretty regular for me – I generally put one or two trips per month on my credit card.

That leaves $576.44 to repay from my own pocket. The charges follow:

$20: March of Dimes donation (my uncle was walking in a fundraiser)

$92.40: Whole Foods (within the monthly grocery budget)

$17.00 Stocks & Blondes (bar) – this was a cheap night – total price included food and beverage

$12.05: Famous Liquors (I think this was for wine & beer)

$138.89: DSW- 2 pairs of shoes (does it help that my old pair broke before buying these?)

$27.05: Poor Phil’s – dinner and drinks

$24.00: House of Blues – drinks with an out-of-town friend… ouch. This didn’t cover much.

$31.69: Volare – dinner with the girls from work. Could have been cheaper

$137.78: Cub foods – groceries/ still in my budget

$64.16: Marshall Field’s – mother’s day gift

$11.42: Marshall Field’s -same day. I guess I wanted something too.

And there you have it. A lesson in how to blow $500 in one month. Some of it is for living expenses, but the majority is fluff. I can get cheaper shoes, and I can eat at home more often.

I also noticed that gift-giving was contagious. I definitely could have avoided the extra gift for myself at Marshall Field’s.

Had I spent more on groceries and less on eating out, I’d probably feel better about my credit card bill.

Never get discouraged. Keep looking at those expenses in detail every month. It really helps when you want to modify your spending habits.

The most important thing is you have recognized which areas you should spend less. Now you know the "fluff" things to avoid.
Just hang in there, you are doing a very good job.

The less you spend the more you save. That has been my motto for a couple of years now and it has helped me a lot. You should recognize things are important from the non important so that when you spend you know what you should get.
