In the Closet

Oh, I’ve gotten myself into the best dilemma – my everyday black mid-heel shoes broke…Now I HAVE to go shoe shopping! Yahoo!
I trace my love of shoes back to my childhood; I used to hide out in grandma’s closet when in trouble or bored, place her shoes on my feet and hope no one found me. If they did, I emerged defiantly from the closet a new woman (girl, rather) – unafraid and fabulous in patent black leather slingbacks.
Fast forward 20 years to Nordstrom’s shoe department, and I’m transported back to her closet. Magically, my troubles seem to float away. The urge to try on different colors and styles takes over. I can’t afford to buy a pair of $500 shoes, but I can certainly try a pair on, walk around in them, imagine the kind of girl that wears them and what her life must be like. Today, she might be attending a ball, tomorrow, vacationing in Venice.
While trying on shoes at Nordstrom is a nice escape, I try not to kid myself. Sure, I walk down Michigan Avenue ‘s Magnificent Mile to window shop and admire the new styles, but when the clock strikes twelve, I know to leave the glass slipper on the stairs. Usually, I end up at Parade of Shoes, DSW or some other discount chain trying to mimic the newest designs.
I know that discount Nine Wests might be looked upon with disdain by Manolo worshippers, but I tell myself I’d rather have a downpayment on a house or a vacation for the price of those shoes. Or maybe I’m saving now so that someday I may fill my own closet with expensive shoes.

I feel your pain- oh those beautiful shoes! My solution, the Nordstrom Rack. There you are almost sure to find a fabulous pair of name brand shoes for the price of those knock-offs. If you’re lucky you can even catch a pair of “worn and refinished” high-end designer shoes for a fraction of the retail price. And since they were probably worn in a style show, they are somewhat broken in- it’s a win, win.
It’s also a great place to find men’s shoes at outstanding prices.

Since I’ve just recently realized that I need to save some buku bucks, I’ve been dreading a shoe-breakdown. Even shopping at the discount stores could break my budget right now!
And thank you for creating “The Budgeting Babe” – you’ve got some great links and support for girls who can’t afford to wear Jimmy Choo.

The key to purchasing beautiful shoes and also being financially conscious is that shoes are an investment. People always ALWAYS judge you by how your shoes look. For shoes I like to apply the old rule, “Dress for the job you want not the job have.” I believe this applies. Remember that even if you get $200 shoes, you can always resole thus keeping tha black pair of pumps for a long time. Even if the heel breaks, my shoe guy can fix anything! The other important piece to this is making friends with the shoe guy. Get discounts from him and make sure he’s good. I had this beautiful pair of D & G’s I must have broken those atleast 3 times and he made the heel look exactly the same!!! It was simply a work of art! I know breaking my heels 3 times sounds very dangerous…but well worth the martinis. Tee hee.
