Lunch plans?

Chicago Tribune’s Caroline Bigda gives us the nitty-gritty on how buying vs. bagging lunch every day can weigh down a budget. For those of you who read yesterday’s paper, the article was accompanied by a “budget breakdown” graphic…not sure why it’s not on the Web site.

I often rationalize buying my lunch while downtown, but usually it’s because I’m too lazy to make my own before leaving the house. But every little bit counts, as Bigda points out.

It’s easier if you cook at night, just make a little more than you can eat and bring it for lunch the next day. That’s my grand strategy and it’s working alright… except those times I go out for happy hour (bad on budget) and then buy lunch the next day. :) Can’t be perfect right?

    Two Words:

    DOLLAR MENU

McDonald’s is my personal fav, but Wendy’s Jack in the Box and Burger King are in contention also!

    What Jim said!

Also, since I’m usually in a hurry when I’m getting ready for work, I sometimes can throw a lunch together with quick ingredients on hand (gladware/ziploc containers are my friend). Today, I packed a roma tomato, a hunk of cheddar cheese, a tortilla, and some fresh basil. At lunchtime, I sliced the tomato and cheese into the tortilla with some basil leaves, popped it in the microwave to soften it up a bit, yum! Plus I was the envy of my coworkers with my cool STAR WARS vintage lunchbox, heh heh.

I used to be all about the fast food, like Neville suggests, but as I got older [and I'm only 29 now], my stomach stopped handling it so well. I still don’t exactly eat healthily, but the $1 menu is not a choice for me anymore. :<

When I finally get motivated, I’ll probably do most of my cooking for the week on Sunday and then freeze everything…

I usually keep a loaf of bread, jar of PB&J, popcorn, and some cans of coke in my office at work. If I’m too tired to pack my lunch, I just have a sandwich – no excuse to go out and eat! I still do it sometimes, but at least I really feel like eating out and am not doing it because of how I was feeling the night before or that morning. (Sorry about your shoes. Happy shopping! I love Filene’s Basement for stuff like that.)
