Planes, frames and dummies

I’m headed to D.C. today on a business trip to attend a convention filled with people who easily make $100,000 – $200,000 more than I do per year. Joy. Hopefully I’ll be able to write from the road at some point.
This weekend was uneventful – still recovering from my wisdom teeth. I bought a few new books, among them “Home Buying for Dummies.” While I’m in no position to actually buy a home at the moment, it’s nice to have a resource and some knowledge on the topic so I don’t go in blind when the time comes. I find the “for Dummies” books to be helpful, though I’ve never read one on the topic of finance. Knitting and Fung Shui, however, fabulous guides. (Don’t worry, I bought the new books with gift cards so at no true expense for me!)
Also this weekend I bought a frame for a poster/print that I got in Spain in 2001; it’s been sitting in my closet since I got back. I’ve been so scared to buy a frame due to pricing, but this weekend I sucked it up and bought the framing. I went to Michael’s, where I got a 50 percent discount on everything: the glass, the frame, the mounting and the matte boards. The total cost was $130, which I still think is pretty high, but the frame is phenomenal and it will look really fabulous on this wall in my apartment. I can’t quite call it a stupid purchase, because I’ve been holding out for so long and because of the sale.
I feel so dull after reading this entry! No new insights or key learnings to pass down, just a breakdown of my expenses. Hopefully I’ll have something good to write about following my trip.

Speaking of fung shui, I just fung shui’d my house this weekend to the tune of about $350. I needed a Grand Duke Talisman, a bamboo fountain, etc. I’m still recovering from sticker shock, but I’m hopeful the $350 will make my home feel better for the upcoming year. So to me, it seems that if you can get away with accomplishing that with a $130 frame, that’s a bargain

Ugh, I stilll don’t understand why frames cost so much. Wood, glass, and labor – always seems to come out to over 100 no how big or small the frame.

Finance is an area where the Dummies books do a really good job of presenting the facts without oversimplifying too much. I got a lot of mileage out of Home Buying for Dummies and Mortgages for Dummies (there’s some overlap, but mortgages are potentially complicated enough to deserve a separate book) when I bought a condo last year.

Wow, someone else who has been holding out on buying a frame. I have one from Spain from 2002 and it’s almost 2006!! I think I’ve beaten your record! And I haven’t even framed my Master’s diploma yet!
