I do think economic downturns play a role in higher crime -- not only are people having trouble finding jobs, keeping jobs, and/or earning a decent living. This frustration leads, I think, not only to more theft, but also more violent crimes -- people feel frustrated, desperate, irritated, frightened...tempers are short, nerves are frayed, and violence becomes more likely. I have the Podcast playing now — thanks so much for the heads-up.
