However, my wife is a teacher and the school system that she works in are laying off and furloughing teachers. Very scary when even educators are feeling the pinch that we in the private sector have.

I am doubly concerned because my daughter is about to graduate with a degree in education.

But even so, ANY and ALL education above and beyond a high school degree is for the good and will benefit you in the end.
